So why exercise? I went to a local keto support group tonight. (We interviewed Amy Berger. It was fantastic.) After we stopped bugging Amy, we were discussing this and that, including the impact exercise does/does not have on weight loss. One woman and her partner tell us why exercise is important. The one woman is 82. Has shit balance. Uses a walking stick, and sometimes gets wheeled in. She fell yesterday. We know how horrible falls can be for the elderly. Can lead to broken hips, which lead to pneumonia, which can lead to death. Only...this woman has been lifting weights off and on since she was 50. Her muscle protected her. No broken hip. No broken anything. She's not even sore today, although she has a skinned knee. (Her keto diet probably also had something to do with that lack of inflammation :) ). There are of course tons of other reasons to exercise, but avoiding a broken hip at 82 because you've made yourself strong is a pretty damn good one.
