In 2018 I started keto and lost over 100 pounds. A pandemic, a move, and two job changes later, I've regained most but am back on track and slowly making my way back down the scale. When I first lost the weight, a lot of friends and colleagues wanted to know what I was doing and I shared that I was doing keto, which of course didn't go over well with most, so then I started saying "cutting out sugars and grains" which was less controversial, but the keto cat was out of the bag and many people tagged me as "she does keto..." and so of course I'm the walking example of "it doesn't work." Anyway, I have a good friend who was always very opposed to keto/low carb and was a strong proponent of high-carb and vegan/vegetarian diets. She was also about 100 pounds overweight and had a handful of health issues. She now also has prediabetes. She needs surgery on her knees but no doctor will touch her because "you need to lose weight." So she started meeting with a nutritionist and is telling me about her great diet. "The focus is on protein, then on vegetables." (me: sounds like keto.) "No, not keto at all, keto isn't safe. They tell us to stay away from carbs." (me: sounds like keto.) "No, I think keto isn't good for people with diabetes/prediabetes. Most traditional medicine doesn't like keto." (me: well, many are recommending keto specifically to reverse diabetes and prediabetes, but ok, and you're right, most docs don't like keto but I can't figure out why) "See, the difference is it's not restrictive. You just can't have carbs." (me: sounds like keto.) "No, here's an article from University of Chicago about how bad keto is." (the article is about how it's not sustainable. me: the sustainability part is hard because processed food and carbs are EVERYWHERE, whether you're following keto or whatever it is you're doing.) "No, see, this isn't keto. It's healthier. No fruits, just berries. They like us to focus on protein. No bread, sugar, rice, or pasta though." (me: sounds great, I hope all goes well for you!) Enjoy your "not-keto" lifestyle change. I'll be waiting over here when you figure it out. π
