While reviewing changes to my medication during a dental visit today, it came up that my dental assistant had been diagnosed with PCOS. Me, who also has this diagnosis, "You know it's a disease of too much insulin, right? They used to say it was too much male hormones, but that's a symptom." We talk about the bad advice of eat 6 meals a day. (A professional did tell her to do this, and not only did she not feel well doing it, shocker, she didn't drop any weight). We talk cutting back on carbs. We talk CGM's (she did finger pricks as part of her journey with a dietician.) We talk inflammation. We talk fasting. I write down Dr. Tro, Dr. Nadia, Dr. Fung's names for her. I write down The Fasting Method and Low Carb MD. Told her there were so many other names I could give her, but she could go down a real rabbit hole just with these resources. She absorbed everything I said. Indicated she had scaled back to 3 meals a day, increased protein, and cut back on carbs, and felt so much better. Told me some of the bad effects she had noticed from eating certain things. She's made some great changes and is poised to do more. She's already seen dietary changes benefit her, and she's open to exploring more. She indicated she felt like she was going it alone in her journey, and she was happy to hear everything I was saying. I told her to look up the resources that I had listed, and she would find communities of people traveling the same path. Oh honey, you just don't even know the support that is out there. I'm excited for how she can change her life. She's young...she's got time to get in front of any long-term impact.
