My thoughts on exercise: 🚨 The link between exercise, stress and weight loss 🚨 1) Exercise does not lead to significant weight loss In various interventional trials it has been shown that exercise does not lead to significant fat/weight loss. In trials that combine and tease apart the effects of “diet and exercise” it has been shown that less than 10% of weight loss can be attributed to the exercise intervention 2) Exercise has been highly associated w/weight loss maintenance In studies that examines weight loss maintainers, there is evidence showing that 90-95% of weight loss maintainers exercise nearly daily 3) The most common cause of weight regain is stress & poor mental health In my clinical practice we use remotely-monitored body composition scales, remotely monitored BP cuffs & CGMs We have found that 100% of weight regain in our practice is due to 2 key factors When patients struggle to maintain weight loss, the overwhelming self reported response as the factor in their life that is associated with their weight gain is -managing stress and their mental health- 100% of weight regain is due to stress & poor mental health 4) Exercise is highly effective as an intervention for managing anxiety, depression, stress Many interventional clinical trials have shown exercise can alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. So let’s put this all together. Exercise sucks for weight loss, stress is the cause of weight regain, exercise relieves stress and when regularly practiced is associated with weight loss maintenance. This is likely closer to the truth than exercise loses calories. Make sure to join our Exercise Message Board
