Some final thoughts on sweeteners… This new data is very complicated. Its true that the lead investigator is the main proponent of TMAO research and has a stated desire to reduce meat consumption in the population There are some major holes with the research. For example, the observational data was taken from 2001 to 2007 when erythritol was just approved. Meaning that they were likely measuring erythritol as a function of disease rather than of intake. So the observational data is very messy. The in-vitro work showed that levels in the blood can cause the platelets to become sticky… then the group of scientists used eight patients to show that a 30 g load causes blood levels to pass that in-vitro level noted to cause platelet stickiness. At the least, the principal investigators are masters of their agenda and craft… but it could very well be that we need to be careful with very high loads of erythritol in people with susceptibility to poor clearance. We have successfully used these products as a bridge to real food, and we will continue to do so. Because our evidence is also strong. I don’t intend to change our messaging other than emphasizing that the ideal and goal is REAL food… and keeping the sweet foods to only as needed. Which has been our messaging all along
