I'm sure many of you have heard of the shopping channel QVC, but maybe not everyone has watched it enough to know the hosts/presenters/salespeople. My mom has been a huge QVC fan for decades and I do sometimes watch the kitchen shows because although I don't like cooking, I do buy tons of cookbooks and gadgets. Anyway, there is a host who is well-loved, David Venable, who is known for his kitchen shows. He's a tall guy who has had big weight fluctuations during his long career there. It's understandable, because they sell a lot of processed food and cook food to demonstrate their gadgets, and he's paid to taste whatever he's making or selling and go "mmmmmm this is so good." Although they stopped tasting food on air during the pandemic, like many of us, he gained a lot of weight. Then suddenly over 2022 his weight has steadily gone down. About a month ago, he posted a video (he has hundreds of thousands of fans that watch him, watch his facebook videos, and follow him on instagram and Facebook) explaining what's changed. He said he went to his doctor at the beginning of 2022 and found out that he's beginning to develop the same health problems that his father had (and died of). His doctor said what they all say: you need to lose weight. David had the presence of mind to say "how do you recommend I do that?" and the doctor told him "read up on low-carb eating. Read everything you can. Watch all the videos. And do that." So he did, and he's lost 70 pounds, and now he's sharing what he's doing with his many followers and viewers. I can't help but laugh a little because when so many of us dropped the carbs down (whether we called it "keto" or not) others mocked us, admonished us, rolled their eyes, said we were killing ourselves. And slowly but surely, more people are coming around and understanding how harmful sugar and carbohydrates can be to our health. The reason I mention this today is that I heard him and another host today exchanging low-carb recipes and low-carb food swaps on air while they were selling bowls or pans and I had to smile, thinking how many tens or hundreds of thousands of people are watching him, listening and learning, and may end up doing the same. He's an "influencer" from before there were influencers and among a large crowd of people who don't generally "follow" social media. Just had to share for those of us who were "cool" before all the others jumped in. 😎
