Morning Check In: Being the physiology geek that I am, I spent the last few days in research and learning mode about various things, including why blood sugar falls AFTER you eat. It was so interesting! But here’s the thing that really stuck out to me personally, because my blood sugar is doing pretty darned well overall (and of course MUCH better than when I was diabetic), but it does show that pattern. Yesterday was a perfect example. My baseline blood sugar was higher from when I got out of bed until my first meal, which was VERY low in carbs. It went down even further with my second meal, which was a bit higher in carbs. What this is telling me is that it’s great that my overall blood sugar is so much better than it used to be, but I am still affected by Hepatic Insulin Resistance - the liver is insulin resistant, so it is not “listening” to the insulin circulating in the blood stream. If it doesn’t listen, it will keep pumping out glucose to keep my blood sugar up. When I eat, even a low carb meal, the pancreas kicks in and I get a bigger bump in insulin, and the liver finally “hears” that bump and stops pumping out glucose. Blood sugar goes down. So, what should I do? I need to help the liver divest itself of that extra glucose it is storing so that it “hears” lower levels of insulin and stops pumping so much glucose out! How do I divest my liver of stored glucose? Fasting!Weight loss. And continue my low carb diet for as long as it takes. Although extended fasting would get the job done faster, I don’t like doing extended fasts too much. I can do OMAD pretty easily, but longer than that causes itching and insomnia which bug me. I do 16:8 most days, but I’m going to push it to 18:6 and really concentrate on making it a “clean fast.” I’m heading out on a trip today with a 6 hour drive. I need to plan my food.
