My N=1 experiment continues. At 22 weeks since starting the ketogenic diet, I had a Lipoprotein Subfractionation blood test done. A test that classifies the LDL particle pattern. Mine was classified as "Pattern A". Predominantly large, buoyant (fluffy) LDL particles. My HDL tested LARGE as well. With a 98 triglycerides reading, an HbA1c of 5.4, it's clear that my body is responding nicely with the low-carb approach. 100lbs lost, insulin quieted, energy through the roof now and BP normalized. Even though my LDL-C/P reading was higher (and to be expected) Dave Feldman's research shows these trends of mine match the Lean Mass Hyper-Responder (LMHR) phenotype: lean, very low-carb/keto people with the "triad" of a very high LDL-C/P, high HDL, low triglycerides. He argues this isn't pathological---it's an adaptive response where the body ramps up lipid energy transport (via more VLDL/LDL particles) for fat-fueled metabolism in lean, insulin-sensitive states. I'm not there yet, but the labs show I'm well on the way. However, I know EXACTLY what the average doctor looking at my numbers would want to do! STATINS, son. You need STATINS. 🤔 I am considering reintroducing a brief carb increase above my <30 g per day and retest in 4 to 6 weeks. I haven't decided yet. It is after all, a personal experiment 😉
