With the weekend and holiday events coming up I wanted to share a technique that has worked well for me and has a lot of scientific backing. It’s called implementation intentions and it’s basically writing a simple sentence about what you will do if/when a specific situation occurs. “I will bring my own food to holiday events so I have options and can avoid old temptations.” Or “I will take the dog for a walk when I wake up.” The physical writing of implementation intentions on paper seems to lock it in, at least for me.
