The FDA plans to phase out eight artificial food dyes by the end of 2026, with a focus on petroleum-based synthetic dyes. This action aims to transition to the use of natural dye alternatives. The dyes to be removed include Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, and Green 3, as well as Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B. The FDA also plans to authorize new natural color additives.
