I have always struggled with extreme hunger, my whole life. For the last 7+ years I have made great strides with extended fasting 2-3 days or more. Long term fasting was the only thing that seemed to tone down the hunger, and it's the only way I could stay in ketosis. But long term fasts all the time are hard to sustain. I have been trying to find an eating plan that manages my hunger and keeps me in ketosis. I've tried all kinds of keto/zero-carb variations: high protein, high fiber, carnivore, etc. and none of them keep me in the magical zone of ketosis and corresponding controlled hunger. But recently I may have discovered something that finally addresses my hunger: homemade bone broth. I have been experimenting with it for a few weeks and I have never felt so much satiety after small meals. And I am staying in ketosis. It seems that, for me, bone broth solves both the satiety and ketosis problems I've had my whole life. This is a game changer for me. Bone/connective-tissue protein is different than muscle protein. I have discussed this issue on X with really smart people like Amber O'Hearn, and it seems like bone broth protein is heavy on the amino acid glycine (in collagen), whereas muscle meat is more BCAA proteins. One theory is that the BCAAs in muscle meat trigger insulin and disrupt satiety, whereas collagen has a somewhat opposite effect. For those who struggle with satiety even when doing all the things right, a transition to more bone broth protein might help. I have never felt as satiated as I've been lately. So instead of a 12oz ribeye, I will cook a 4oz ribeye and smother it in a bone-broth "gravy". It is DELICIOUS (bone broth provides umami flavoring, the same taste that MSG provides), and it fills me like nothing else. Instead of 2-3 hamburgers, I now make "hamburger soup" with one 4oz burger, bone broth, a little minced onion, and butter. It's AMAZING, and more satiating than anything I've ever eaten. I am extremely excited about this. For someone who has struggled with hunger literally since birth, this is game changing.
