MyInsight: Chasing Ketones – Understand Yourself – My Thoughts, Your Perspective May Vary Achieving nutritional ketosis is a journey that takes time, don't rush it. It can be frustrating as you adjust your metabolism from using glucose to ketones as a major fuel source. Don't be too focused upon your ketone numbers. Just monitor & make adjustments as needed. Since 2023, I used intermittent fasting while enjoying various foods and eating in restaurants, leading to a weight roller coaster. In June 2024, I switched to a strict ketogenic diet, and it took over three months to become keto-adapted. Using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) was invaluable in identifying foods that hindered my progress. I simplified my choices and made adjustments based on CGM & ketone feedback, noting that some foods could kick me out of ketosis, sometimes taking up to 7 days to get back on track. As an engineer, I analyze how my food choices affect my body, treating setbacks as lessons. I measure my morning and evening blood glucose and ketones, often finding higher ketone levels at night. This suggests that my body is using the extra ketones at night, and the liver is starting to create the fuel as needed. It’s somewhat like when you pee on a ketone strip; you see purple for a few days, then it’s gone. When you measure your blood ketones, you see them; they're just not spilling over into the urine because they are being used by your body. Be Positive, We all will get there, I have faith! What are your thoughts? Some light reading: Nutritional ketosis ( National Institutes of Health: nih gov ) Nutritional ketosis can be defined as the intentional restriction of dietary carbohydrate intake to accelerate the production of ketones and induce a metabolic effect that stabilizes blood sugar, minimizes insulin release, and thereby mitigates the downstream anabolic and tumorigenic effects of longstanding insulin resistance.
