That is the smile of just finally making it 1 length of the pool doing butterfly. I’m working toward swimming a 50m butterfly by the time I leave VT in mid October. I call it my 50 at 50 goal! As a high schooler, 100 fly was my stroke. I can swim other strokes for many hundred of meters now, but fly is a different story! Running in the deep end and swimming have saved me during recovery after the 3 months of no weight bearing on my right foot and relying on a knee scooter took such a toll. Following “fluid running” workouts on my waterproof headset or listening to podcasts has made it really enjoyable. Using the funky resistance fins that injured MMA fighters use to recover (see 2nd and 3rd photos), I get in my “weights” in as well as my cardio, all without pressure on my joints and I don’t have to be drenched in sweat! Plus I’ve met a lot of regulars at the pool each morning. In fact, a retired military guy is the one who dared me to try swimming a 50 fly and has kept on me. The whole pool experience has been such a silver lining to what felt like such a setback when I first heard my foot bone snap. Never could have imagine the gifts it would offer. Weird how those “disasters” can strangely also be be deliverances!
