For the past couple of weeks, I was on a solo vacation. It was almost 3000 driving miles. My husband, son, and mom stayed home with the cats and I went off adventuring *all by myself*! I love a solo road trip and hadn't had one in about 10 years! Also, husband really was the hero - he did 2 parents' worth of swim meet volunteering all on his own so that I could go adventuring! Notes from my road trip: - Traveling with a ZeroWater pitcher, an electric kettle, and all the stuff for tea and proper pour-over coffee is a good decision. I was in a hotel for 7 nights and with various family for 5, and was able to have perfect morning and evening beverages every time. - Cattleman's Steakhouse in Louisville KY sold me an "a la carte ribeye" for a slight discount. If you don't ask (politely) the answer is already, "no," right? - Wendy's in Ferdinand IN sold me a bowl of bacon for under $5 one morning. This was a happy event. All I had to do was ask for "a la carte bacon". - The event I attended was at Crown Center (Hallmark World HQ), split between the Sheraton and the Westin hotels. There's an enclosed elevated walkway between the two, about a ½-mile distance. I walked between 5 and 6½ miles a day due to conference activities. My blood sugar was *so* stable. Also, I ate none of the provided snack food or meal, but I did have some of the wine. - Being between sizes can be annoying when you're walking a lot and your underwear keep falling down inside your very loose jeans. I had to go to Target and buy new underwear on day 2 in KC! - Starbucks coffee is nasty (my opinion, I know), but adding chocolate-caramel LMNT and cream makes it pretty okay. - The lovely (and well-tipped) server at Longhorn Steakhouse in Overland Park KS couldn't sell me an a la carte ribeye, but she recommended bacon as my side dish. YES, PLEASE! I took that "to go" and had breakfast for the next morning. And then I went back there for dinner the next afternoon and did the same again! - On the way home (I turned a 16 hour drive into a 6-day trip by visiting people), I had lunch with an old friend that I hadn't seen in years. I was greeted with, "WOW! You look GREAT!" That was happy! Now I'm back. And I have an annual physical with my VERY conventional doc on Tuesday. The blood tests have already been done. My A1c is down to 4.8 (SWEET!) and my fasting insulin is 14.2 (an improvement, but not great). My doc wants me on a statin because my LDL is 120; that's not happening. My triglycerides are 62 and my HDL is 55, so my Trig:HDL ratio is 1.1 - that is *fantastic*! I just have to convince him to tweak my thyroid meds a bit...
