Are you currently injured and feeling frustrated? If so, I hope this might bring a bit of hope and encouragement. In February, I was told I’d be “non-weight bearing” on my right leg for 3 months. No walking, no driving. And that it was likely to be 6-7 months before I would be able to walk normally. It is now 5 months after the injury occurred, and so far this week, I have walked 2 miles on a flat hiking trail, biked 11 miles on an e-bike, and done an hour of deep water running in a pool 3 mornings. I even carefully navigated down the bank of a gorgeous Vermont river to put my feet in the water on this scorching hot day. In February things felt bleak, I was worried about weight gain and being set back in my fitness journey. I did gain 20 lbs and I lost range of motion in my right hip and ankle and my hip and butt muscles atrophied a bit. But I also found something I love to do that I’d never expected I’d like (the deep water running workouts from Fluid Running) and I took the leap to ride a bike again after 25 yrs of not doing so… all because I’ve been looking for ways to move despite the broken foot limitations. It shifted my perspective on a number of things, opened my heart in some interesting ways, and the whole experience helped me think and plan differently for the future. Some awesome silver linings, for sure! So hang in there! Your healing may feel like a set back too or may be taking a very long time, but I hope you experience some helpful silver linings of your own in the process of your recovery.
