There is a very fit man at my gym who I see frequently He is mid 50s and in great shape I asked him what his secret was and he said, “I eat every 3 hours, I eat 20 egg whites per day, lots of chicken and fish and tons of vegetables” I asked him about any other tips he has. “I limit my alcohol as much as possible, I drink less than monthly” I told him, “I haven’t had breakfast in years. And I rarely eat more than 1-2 meals” He was shocked. I asked him how hard it is for him to lose weight… and he looked at me funny. “You won’t believe this, but my problem is gaining weight. My whole life I have been small and have no appetite. I eat this way to try to get up to 180lbs but it’s very hard for me” How long have you struggled being thin, I asked. He said, “my whole life I was always very skinny, no appetite and always could see my ribs. I was skin and bones” Before we parted ways he asked me a question. But it hit me that much of weight loss can be like this. People with no appetite, no insight into what it’s like to always gain weight - they find themselves giving advice to people who are always hungry. It’s a mismatch. He asked me why I eat 1-2 meals? I said if you are like me and you generally don’t need a reason to eat but can and have… you just know to not eat if you aren’t hungry. If every eating event an animal like me can put down a bunch of food, why would I subject myself to unnecessary food cues and meals? He said he “understood but it was hard to wrap his head around it”. There is wisdom in this story. If you want to regulate your relationship to food. You should find a tribe that has conquered regulating their relationship to food. Nobody else is here to help you like we can
